4. What is Disproportionate Reaction?

A chemical reaction in which an atom of a single compound undergoes an Oxidation reaction as well as a reduction reaction is called a disproportionate reaction.

Conditions:-

Those Whose oxidation number lies between intermediate.

Ex-

H3PO4

=)1×3+x-2×4=0

=)x=+5

Not undergoes disproportionate

H3PO3

=)1×3+x-2×3=0

=)x=+3

Undergoes disproportionate

The answer of why not undergoes disproportionate and why undergoes disproportionate.

E.C of phosphorus=1, 8, 5

Hence, it is in p-Block= maximum=V.E.=5 and minimum=V.E.-8=5-8=-3

Conclusion:-

H3PO4 does not undergo disproportionately because it does not lie between the intermediate of 5 and -3.

H3PO3 undergoes disproportionate because it lies between intermediate of 5 and -3.

5. What is Comproportionate Reaction?

A Redox reaction in which different oxidation states come to a single Oxidation state is called comproportionate reaction. It is an opposite of a disproportionate reaction.

Ex-

Ag0+Ag+2  ⟶ 2Ag+

Oxidation=0 to +1

Reduction=+2 to +1

6. What is Intermolecular Redox Reaction?

In a single compound, 1 atom undergoes oxidation and the other undergoes Reduction is called an intermolecular Redox reaction.

Ex- 2K+1Cl+5O3-2   ⟶ 2K+1Cl-1 + O20

Oxidation=-2 to 0

Reduction=+5 to -1

What are the Applications of Redox Reaction?

1. How to Balance chemical reactions?

A chemical reaction is balanced to satisfy principles of atom conservation and mass conservation.
Ex- 2H2O   ⟶  2H2 + O2
Verification
According to the Principle of atom conservation
Total atom in reactant=
H=4  O=2
Total atom in product=
H=4  O=2

According to mass conservation
Mass of reactant=36g
Mass of product=4g+32g=36g

What is the process of balancing chemical reactions?

How to balance Acidic medium chemical reaction?

Rule of balancing Acidic medium chemical reaction

*Divide reaction into two parts

   i) oxidation

   ii) Reduction

*Take one of them

  i) Balance another atom except for oxygen

  ii) Balance oxygen by taking H2O(water) molecule that side was deficient.

  iii) Balance hydrogen by taking (H+).

   iv) Balance charge by taking electron.

  v) the Same process repeats in the other half-reaction both reactions are added and multiplied electron with an appropriate number such that the electron is cancelled.

How to balance Basic medium or Alkaline medium chemical reaction?

*Divide redox reaction into two parts
    i) Oxidation
    ii) Reduction
*Balance another atom except for oxygen
*Balance oxygen by taking water molecules that side which has excess oxygen.
*Hydrogen is balanced by taking OH- ion those side which has less hydrogen.
*Balance charge by taking electron.
*the Same process is repeated in the other half-reaction. Both reactions are added and multiplied with the appropriate number. So that electron is cancelled.

What is the Oxidation number/oxidation state method?

In this method, find the oxidation number of each atom.

*Divide reaction into two parts

  i) Increase oxidation number

  ii) Decrease oxidation number

*Increase decrease oxidation no. Multiply such that both cancel to each other.

*Hydrogen and oxygen balance by taking water molecules. If there is rest it is balanced by the try and error method.

What is the process of the Oxygen number method?

In this method first balance oxygen atom then balances another atom.

Hydrogen number method

This method first balance the hydrogen atom. Then, balance another atom.

Calculation of equivalent weight

The equivalent weight of Oxidising or Reducing agent is equal to

molar mass/change in oxidation number or number of electron Loss or Gain.

What is Stock notation?

When we write name cations with their oxidation number in Roman numerals. This representation is called stock notation.
